Joemar Melendez was raised in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico. Summer of 2008 Melendez was part of the Puerto Rico team in the Big League Worlds series in Easley, South Carolina. Fall of 2008 Melendez became part of the Garden City Broncbuster.
After the two seasons in Garden City Kansas, Melendez went back to Puerto Rico, to play in the fall league in Puerto Rico where he played for his hometown team the Azucareros de Yabucoa. During the same year, Melendez went to play a season with the Cocoteros, Loiza.
In the Spring of 2012, Melendez transferred to Urbana University where he played his last two seasons. In 2013 Melendez received the honor of Relief Pitcher in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC). Finishing his career as a player, Melendez became part of the coaching staff with Urbana University. He spent 6 seasons with Urbana University, where he spent time being the pitching coach for 3 seasons, and outfielders coach his last 3 seasons at Urbana University
